One of the best things about Cornwall is that no matter how many times you have visited or lived here, there always seems to be more beautiful places to discover and enjoy.
This was very much the case with Hotel Meudon, which sits atop lush tropical gardens to the north of the Helford River, near to Mawnan Smith. We had heard of this hotel at Dog Friendly Cornwall, and contemplated visiting, but never found the time, until we discovered that the hotel is extremely dog friendly and offers really sumptuous afternoon teas.
We headed off with a little rescue border terrier Sky who is very well behaved but a little nervous. The hotel is situated just beyond the very pretty village of Mawnan Smith on the Helford, just off a country lane out of the village.
On arriving we really wished we’d found this place before. It is a really smart boutique hotel. There are some really cosy, stylish spaces to enjoy Afternoon Tea, including a gorgeous lounge where we could have snuggled up by the fireside, and the Bridge Room which looks out over the gardens which stretch down to the sea.
We chose the room with a view and enjoyed looking out at these really exotic and well-kept sub-tropical gardens from the warmth and comfort of this naturally lit space. It’s an ideal room to be cosy but feel as though you are surrounded by nature.
Our afternoon tea soon arrived and be warned, it is very filling! There were delicate sandwiches, some truly spectacular cakes and treats including macaroon, profiteroles and home made cakes, made with really imaginative but well balanced flavours such as passionfruit. And then of course there was a magnificent and very generous cream tea made with home made scones.
Many people overlook the actual tea, in an afternoon tea, but this was loose leaf, properly brewed in teapots tea, that was just enough and a little bit more to complement the sandwiches, cakes and scones.
Feeling full to the brim, we decided to take a gentle stroll with Sky through the gardens afterwards. It’s a beautiful and peaceful stroll through the gardens before you come to the coast path and beach at the bottom of the garden. An ideal walk to follow and afternoon of utter indulgence. Sky enjoyed herself and was made to feel really welcome, as were we.
If you’re looking for an ideal outing to take a friend, four-legged or two-legged at any time of the year, we highly recommend Afternoon Tea at the Hotel Meudon. And we did happen to spot the spa on the way through… We’ll definitely be back.
