This pub has won many awards for its simple, but very expertly cooked seasonal menus. It has a large garden overlooking the ocean below and is situated along that glorious stretch of road between St Ives and St Just on the north coast, with wonderful walks along the coast path and moor nearby. well worth a visit.

Rick Stein was originally behind the food revolution at this pub and the food is still based on his recipes which aim to ensure people can enjoy really good quality traditional pub food. There are really delicious steaks, burgers and mussels and a lovelys election of ales and wines. Based as it is near the beautiful stretch of beaches around Harlyn Bay, Trevose and Constantine, there are lots of great walks around here too.

Greg and Alli Laskey run this pub in Mawgan, near Gweek and they recently won a Taste of the West Gold award for their fantastic food and service. Expect delicious, traditional pub food such as slow-cooked pork belly with apple and sultana chutney and sticky toffee pudding. The menu is also available in packs that you can heat at home in their Fresshh! range (, ideal if you love fine dining but dare not take your dog where others are eating! Having said that, this pub is very dog friendly — Rosie was very welcome as we ate our Sunday roast. It is a beautiful area and you can enjoy walks along the upper Helford river.

Overlooking Trevaunance Cove is yet another award-winning pub which welcomes dogs. The Driftwood Spars is famed for its high quality beers and the food is fabulous too, with imaginative twists on fresh, season produce. The lunchtime sharing platters are fabulous and there are also dessert platters, including an ale plate, which involves lots of chocolate. Walks here again are stunning around this coastline, which is in the heart of Poldark country.
