Porthkidney Sands

Expansive, quiet sandy beach near Hayle & Lelant

Porthkidney Sands is an expansive sandy beach which runs alongside the Hayle estuary channel and around beyond the dunes all the way toward Carbis Bay.

It is dog-friendly all year round with no seasonal or daily restrictions.

The beach is generally very quiet of beach-goers and is very popular with dog walking.

Access is from the Lelant side with limited parking along Church Road & Church Lane by St Uny’s Church or further along near the West Cornwall Golf Club.

There are clearly marked paths from the Church down to the estuary access with doggy-doo bins along the way. The path dissects the golf course so be sure to keep your dog on the lead on your way down to the beach. The walk takes around 10 minutes at a reasonable pace.

NOTE: The river estuary is not suitable for swimming and the currents at this end of the beach can be dangerous.

There is also access through the West Cornwall Golf Club with a public path that runs through the course and then back toward the dunes, then taking you down to the sand beach. This is a longer rout to the beach but it takes away having to walk along the estuary edge route and provides amazing scenery from above the dunes and along the Great Western Railway line.

You can also walk from Carbis Bay along the Coastal Path to access Porthkidney Sands.

During the warmer months, dunes can be habituated by Adders out sunning themselves, especially so during the morning hours of the day so be careful and keep your dog on a lead until you reach the beach.

The beach itself is expansive and provides a large space when the tide is low with a sandy base all over and at times you can walk all the way around to Carbis Bay Beach (which has seasonal dog walking restrictions in place). Be careful during high-tide times if you’re near the Carbis Bay end of the beach as there is no easy access up the cliffs.

Porthkidney Sands is very exposed so it can get quite windy – not a nice thing for either you or your dog to have to endure.

In summary, a great place to exercise your dogs so long as you’re careful in the dunes and near the estuary.
