Nordic walking with your dog in Cornwall

Walking your dog is good for your health, with Australian researchers saying just 150 minutes of walking your dog each week (around 22 minutes each day) reduces the risk of heart disease.

Nordic walking is wonderful for your health. You burn as many calories per mile as you do running, but you are less likely to suffer damage to your joints. It is a fitness activity which is suitable for those at all levels of fitness and if you walk in a group, you are more likely to enjoy yourself and keep walking.

Walk Kernow (www.walkkernow.com) is a group which offers group walks all around Cornwall, several times each week with trained walk leaders and on many of the walks, dogs are allowed. You can either let your dog walk along with the group (if they are well behaved off the leash), or you can use a running leash secured around your waist. You’ll need to attend a Beginner’s Workshop to learn the basics and then you can buy walk cards of 5 or 10 walks at a time and book walks, and hire the poles used in Nordic walking as and when suits you.

The walks take place at various locations around Cornwall, with dog friendly walks taking place at Gwithian,  Mylor and Tehidy . www.walkkernow.co.uk
